Facebook is always changing its network and as a business using Facebook, you should always tweak your page to stay up to speed with the changes. Continuing to change and modify your Facebook business page will enable your business to better reach consumers.

Keeping that in mind, it’s a good idea to revisit your business Facebook page to implement any changes, and to update anything you may have missed since you set it up. Here are five things to review to make sure your Facebook business page is optimized:

  1. It’s all about the keywords: If you haven’t taken the time to check out Google’s Keyword Planner, now is the time. Use this tool to find out what word searches people use the most to find your type of business. Use at least one of those keywords in your Facebook username as well as one or more in your page categories, topics and description. Finding out what words people search is also important for your SEO strategy.Google-Keyword-Planner-Access
  2. Utilize Facebook page usernames: You may have overlooked that fact that you can change your Facebook username. The username is the URL of your page. Keep in mind that once you change the username, the old links on all of your other sites will not work. Also you can only change your username once, so make sure that it is your business name or a name that reflects your business. Example: Susie’s Salon would be great to use but if that salon is located in Dallas, facebook.com/SusiesSalonDallas will work better. To change your username go to edit page, update page info and choose page address to change the username. And then make sure to update any links to your Facebook page that you might have on your website or anywhere else.Screen Shot 2013-11-05 at 10.44.36 AM
  3. Update your cover art: Take a look at your Facebook business page cover art. How long has it been up there? Does this image still represent your business? Is it relevant and designed to attract attention to your business? Note: you can use text in your cover photo, but it cannot exceed 20% of the image size. Another great idea to add to your cover photo is a call to action, and contact information. Take a look at your cover photo and take the time to freshen it up!Screen Shot 2013-11-05 at 10.47.51 AM
  4. Update your page history, tell a story: When many Facebook pages were created, page admins started posting status updates right away and bypassed unique history about the business. Have you ever used the Milestones function for your business page? A milestone is a unique update about your business. You can add a milestone for the day your business opened, the date a new product launched, or the date of a business recognition, a partner is added or anything else that is important in regards to your business.Screen Shot 2013-11-05 at 10.53.29 AM
  5. Utilize your tabs: Another underutilized area on Facebook business pages is the tabs section located right below the cover art. There are many Facebook apps you can use to market your business effectively. Apps in the Facebook search are rated and you can sort by industry.
